After we shared a wonderful meal of sashimi, chirashi rice, chow mein, and of course birthday cake, a brief Obon meeting was held. This year’s Obon celebration will be held July 28, 2019, at the Veterans Memorial Community Center in Santa Maria.
Requests for volunteers and donations of any Japanese items for a “White Elephant” sale were made, as well as a request for any evidence (photos, oral histories, etc.) of the history of when our Guadalupe Buddhist Church Obon Festival began, and when it was restarted after the Japanese American community returned to the area following World War II.
