Tanaka Family at Guadalupe Buddhist Church

Tanaka family photo at the altar dedication (nyubutsu shiki) for the Guadalupe Buddhist Church. Mr. Umekichi Tanaka, a widower, was the first to bring his children to the Guadalupe Children’s Home, bringing two of his oldest daughters, Toshiko and Akiko. As Akiko Tanaka Iwata writes, “Many parents thought it was a good idea to take their children to the Buddhist Church; so children from cities like Arroyo Grande, Pismo, San Luis Obispo, Morro Bay and elsewhere came to join us, and we became one big family.
